Things to Do

North Shore Winter

Frozen waterfalls, ski trails, snowmobiling and quiet shoreline

Winter is the North Shore’s best-kept secret. The waterfalls freeze into blue ice, the ski and snowshoe trails run right out of the state parks, and the shoreline you shared with a hundred people in July is empty except for steam coming off the lake.

Snow is reliable from December into March, and the ridges hold it longer than the lakeshore. Bring traction cleats for icy trails, and expect Highway 61 to be plowed and open the whole way — this is an easy winter drive, not an expedition.

Winter is when the shore is cheapest and quietest. Cove Point Lodge keeps its great-room fireplace going through the season, The Harbors‘ villas and domes have private hot tubs, and North Shore Camping Co. runs a winter season for anyone who wants the cold version. Up in Lutsen, Ours Resort keeps all six cabins open through ski season, five minutes from Lutsen Mountains.

Frozen waterfalls

Gooseberry, Illgen and the Split Rock River cascades all freeze into ice columns, and Gooseberry’s paved loop stays walkable most of the winter. Cleats or microspikes make it a completely different day.

Ski & snowshoe at Split Rock

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park grooms lakeside cross-country trails with the tower in view, and Gooseberry and Tettegouche both add snowshoe routes off the parking lots.

Snowmobiling

The North Shore State Trail runs the ridge from Duluth to Grand Marais with connectors down to the towns, and local clubs groom hundreds of miles of side trails.

Winter camping & hot tubs

North Shore Camping Co. runs a winter season for anyone who wants the cold version, and The Harbors’ deck hot tubs are at their best when the lake is steaming.

Where to stay

Common questions

Is the North Shore worth visiting in winter?

Yes, and it's the quietest season. Waterfalls freeze into blue ice, Split Rock and Northwoods have groomed ski and snowshoe trails, Lutsen Mountains is an hour north for downhill, and lodging rates are lower than summer or fall outside the holidays.

Can you see frozen waterfalls on the North Shore?

Gooseberry Falls and several Baptism River falls freeze into ice formations most winters. Trails are icy, so traction cleats or snowshoes are essentially required from December through March.

Is winter camping available on the North Shore?

Yes. North Shore Camping Co. runs a winter camping season with furnished, heated walk-in tent sites above Lake Superior, and the nearby lodges and domes have fireplaces and hot tubs for a warmer version of the same trip.
