A slot-canyon gorge and Carlton Peak above Schroeder
The Temperance River has cut the most dramatic gorge on the North Shore — a narrow slot canyon of potholes, chutes and cauldrons where the water disappears between walls of rock only a few feet apart. A short trail follows the rim on both sides, with bridges and railings at the best viewpoints, and it is one of the shore’s genuinely spectacular walks for very little effort.
The park also takes in Carlton Peak, a bald knob of anorthosite rising some 900 feet above the lake, and it sits at the north end of the shore near Schroeder and Tofte — about an hour past Beaver Bay, and a good turnaround point for a day of driving Highway 61.
Plan around the drive. Ours Resort in Lutsen is fifteen minutes north of the park, while Cove Point Lodge and North Shore Camping Co. in Beaver Bay are about an hour south of it, and Superior Shores Resort and The Harbors in Two Harbors about an hour and a half.

Follow the river up from Highway 61 past potholes drilled into the rock and chutes where the whole river squeezes into a few feet of width. Stay behind the railings — the rock is slick and the drops are real.
Continue upstream to where the canyon opens and the falls step down through the rock, the quietest part of the walk and the best photograph in the park.
A steady climb to a bare summit with a 360-degree view over Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Mountains — the best summit view on this stretch of shore, and a popular bouldering area.
Below the highway the river reaches the lake at a cobble beach, with the Cross River wayside and Schroeder’s historic Father Baraga’s Cross a couple of minutes away.
Campsites sit on both sides of Highway 61, some right above the lake with the sound of the surf, and cart-in sites along the river.
Temperance pairs naturally with Cascade River and the Lutsen area to the north, or as the far stop on a Tettegouche-and-north day from Beaver Bay.

Steady and rocky, about 3.5 miles round trip with a real climb to a bald summit roughly 900 feet above Lake Superior. Allow two to three hours and wear proper shoes.
About an hour north on Highway 61, near Schroeder and just south of Tofte. It pairs well with Cascade River for an upper-shore day trip.
