Five waterfalls on one paved loop, 13 miles north of Two Harbors
Gooseberry Falls is the busiest state park on Minnesota’s North Shore, and the reason is simple: five waterfalls sit within a short walk of the parking lot on a paved trail almost anyone can manage. The Gooseberry River drops through Upper, Middle and Lower Falls in a few hundred yards of dark volcanic rock, then runs out to Lake Superior across a cobble beach.
The park is right on Highway 61 with a large visitor center, so it doubles as the first real stop for most people driving up the shore. Go early or late in the day in summer and fall — the lot fills by mid-morning on October weekends. A Minnesota state park vehicle permit is required, and one permit covers every park on this list.
Gooseberry is an easy day trip from anywhere on the lower shore: about fifteen minutes south of Cove Point Lodge and North Shore Camping Co. in Beaver Bay, and fifteen minutes north of Superior Shores Resort and The Harbors in Two Harbors.

The main event, all reachable on a paved loop under half a mile from the visitor center. Stone bridges and viewing platforms built by the CCC in the 1930s frame each drop.
Head upstream for a roughly 2-mile forest loop to a quieter falls with a footbridge, on a Superior Hiking Trail segment. Most visitors never leave the paved section, so this is where the solitude is.
Below the falls the river opens onto a cobble beach and agate-hunting shoreline with the Gooseberry River delta — a completely different landscape from the gorge upstream.
The paved shoreline bike trail runs from the park south toward Two Harbors and north to Beaver Bay, making Gooseberry the natural trailhead for a car-free ride.
Drive-in and walk-in campsites sit in the woods between the highway and the lake, plus group camps. Reservations open well ahead and fall weekends book out fastest.
The falls freeze into blue ice columns and the paved loop stays walkable most of the winter with traction cleats. Snowshoe and ski trails run off the visitor center.
Five. Upper, Middle and Lower Falls are all within a short paved walk of the visitor center, and Fifth Falls is about a mile upstream on a forest loop trail.
There is no admission fee, but a Minnesota state park vehicle permit is required to park. A single day pass or annual permit covers every state park on the North Shore.
Plan 45 minutes to an hour for the paved loop past the three main falls. Adding the Fifth Falls loop and the Lake Superior shoreline makes it a half day.
About 13 miles northeast on Highway 61, roughly 15 minutes. From Beaver Bay it is about 15 miles south.
